‘Multiple Fatalities’ Reported in Florida Shooting Six Dead, Including Gunman, in Florida Workplace Shooting, Officials Say
(about 2 hours later)
Several people were fatally shot near Orlando, Fla., the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Monday. Five people at a business near Orlando, Fla., were fatally shot by a former employee who later killed himself, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Monday.
Law enforcement authorities said they were investigating the shooting, which led to the closing of a section of North Forsyth Road, in a commercial area outside the Central Florida city. The scene was under control by 9:30 a.m., the police said. Sheriff Jerry L. Demings told reporters that deputies arrived at Fiamma Inc., a business that makes awnings for recreational vehicles, a few minutes after 8 a.m. on Monday after receiving a call about a shooting.
It was not immediately clear how many people were shot. The sheriff’s office said on Twitter that there would be further details about the shooting later in the day. Four of the victims three men and a woman were found dead there of gunshot wounds, he said. A fifth person, a man, was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The Orlando Police Department referred inquiries to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The person suspected of the shooting, a 45-year-old man who was fired from his job there in April, had fatally shot himself by the time law enforcement arrived, Sheriff Demings said. He had been armed with a handgun and a knife, but there was no indication he had used the knife, the sheriff said.
The shooting took place at a business headquarters in the city, Capt. Angelo Nieves, with the sheriff’s office, told CNN. The relationship the gunman had with his victims was not immediately clear. His identity was not released.
Live television footage showed police cars parked outside a bakery in what looked like an industrial lot, but it was not immediately clear if that was where the shooting happened. There were seven witnesses there who were not hurt, the sheriff said.
Soon after the authorities arrived, they determined that there was no active shooter situation. The attack took place in multiple places inside the building, when about 12 people were present.
The sheriff said there was no indication that the man was a member of any organization or that the shooting was a terror incident.
Mayor Teresa Jacobs of Orange County and officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation also arrived at the scene later Monday morning.
Sheriff Demings said that the authorities had been called to the same business in June 2014, responding to an episode of workplace violence involving the same man suspected in Monday’s shooting, but no charges were filed then.
