Incumbent MP Chi Onwurah secured 24,071 votes, almost 15,000 more than second placed Steve Kyte of the Conservatives. Minutes later it was announced the party also held Houghton and Sunderland South.
Sunderland has historically been the first place to count and declare its results but Newcastle said it would be challenging its North East neighbours. Incumbent Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah secured 24,071 votes, almost 15,000 more than second placed Steve Kyte of the Conservatives.
The Liberal Democrats came third, UKIP fourth and the Green Party fifth. Bridget Phillipson secured 24,665 votes in Houghton and Sunderland South, twice as many as Conservative Paul Howell.

Sunderland has historically been the first place to count and declare its results but Newcastle trumped its North East neighbours returning its result nine minutes faster at 23:01 BST.
In Newcastle Central, the Liberal Democrats came third, UKIP fourth and the Green Party fifth.
UKIP came third in Houghton and Sunderland South, Liberal Democrats fourth, Green Party fifth and independent Mick Watson sixth.
Labour saw their share of the vote in Newcastle Central rise from 55% in 2015 to 65% this time around.
In Houghton and Sunderland South, their share rose from 55% to 60%.
