Darren Osborne, 47, was remanded in custody at Westminster magistrates court on Friday. Darren Osborne, 47, was unshaven and had the remnants of a black eye as he appeared wearing a white T-shirt and grey jogging bottoms at Westminster magistrates court four days after the attack, which occurred near Finsbury Park mosque in the early hours of Monday.
Earlier a Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said: “Today, the CPS authorised the Metropolitan police to charge Darren Osborne with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder following the incident in Finsbury Park in the early hours of Monday 19 June. He will appear at Westminster magistrates court on 23 June in relation to these charges. Osborne spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. When asked for his address he shrugged.
The unemployed father of four from Cardiff is charged with murdering Makram Ali, 51, who died in the attack. He also faces a charge of attempted murder under the Criminal Attempts Act 1981.
Prosecutor Samuel Main told the hearing: “The crown’s case is that Osborne, motivated by extreme political views and a personal hatred of Muslims, acted to kill, maim, injure and terrify as many as possible by driving a vehicle into a group of pedestrians. His was a deliberate and premeditated terrorist act and a terrorist murder.”
The case, which will be handled under section 30 of the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, will go to the Old Bailey, where a hearing on preliminary matters is scheduled for Tuesday 27 June. Osborne has been remanded in custody.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Osborne are live and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice ongoing proceedings.”“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Osborne are live and that he has a right to a fair trial. Police were called on Monday to reports of a van mounting the pavement and ploughing down pedestrians on Seven Sisters Road, close to a mosque. Among those injured were two people who are still critically ill in hospital. The attack, which was apparently directed at the Muslim community, sparked pleas for community solidarity. The police and government viewed it as the fourth terrorist attack in Britain since March.
A man aged 47 was detained by people at the scene and handed over to the police.
Ali had earlier collapsed and was receiving first aid from a passerby when the van attack happened. Paramedics could not save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.04am.
