Kirkuk governor survives attack Baghdad hospital blasts kill four
(about 2 hours later)
The governor of the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk has survived a suicide bomb attack, police say. Two car bombs outside one of Baghdad's main hospitals have killed four people and injured at least seven others, Iraqi security officials say.
Abdul Rahman Mustafa and his bodyguards were unharmed in the blast in the city of Kirkuk, which killed one civilian and injured at least another 12 people. Most were civilians waiting to collect relatives' bodies from the Yarmouk hospital mortuary, they said.
The attack happened as the governor's convoy was driving slowly through the city centre. Separately, northern Kirkuk province governor Abdul Rahman Mustafa survived a suicide bomb attack, police said.
The bomber with a belt of explosives blew himself up after failing to get inside the governor's car. However, the blast in Kirkuk city killed one civilian and injured at least 12 other people.
The attack took place at about 0935 local time (0635 GMT), police say. The explosions outside Yarmouk hospital took place as people gathered at the packed mortuary to collect bodies of their relatives for burial, officials say.
One of the bombs apparently targeted a police patrol near the hospital, killing a policeman.
Yarmouk hospital has taken in many thousands of victims of growing violence in Baghdad since the US-led invasion in 2003.
