The man, said to be dressed as a doctor, began shooting at the 1,000-bed Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in the Morris Heights district, reports say. The man, said to have been dressed as a doctor and armed with a rifle, is now dead, they said.
At least three people are believed to have been shot, although other reports speak of multiple casualties. The shooting began at about 14:45 local time (18:45 GMT) at the 1,000-bed Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in the Mount Hope district.
A spokesman for the police said that one gunman had now been found dead at the scene. Police identified the gunman as Henry Bello, a former doctor at the hospital.

There are also some reports of a fire in the building. The victims were reportedly shot on the 16th and 17th floors.
New York's mayor has just been briefed on the situation and police are going floor to floor.
