Two killed at Israeli building in Amman Israeli 'kills attacker' at Jordan embassy
(about 1 hour later)
Two Jordanians have been killed and an Israeli wounded in an incident next to Israel's embassy in Amman. An Israeli guard has shot dead a Jordanian who attacked him with a screwdriver next to the Israeli embassy in Jordan, Israeli officials say.
Israel's foreign ministry said a Jordanian attacked a security guard with a screwdriver in a residential building used by the embassy. A second Jordanian was inadvertently killed in the gunfire, Israel says. The guard was reportedly wounded.
He was one of two men delivering furniture to the building, it said in a statement. The attacker was a carpenter working in a residential building used by the embassy, an Israeli statement said.
One of the workers and the building's landlord were killed and the security guard was injured, it added. It is one of the most serious incidents between the two countries since they signed a peace treaty in 1994.
It did not confirm earlier reports of shooting but said the guard had "acted in self defence". The second Jordanian, who died from his wounds in hospital, was identified as the building's landlord.
The incident came at a time of heightened tension in the region over a Jerusalem holy site. Jordanian police have sealed off the area around the heavily protected embassy in the Rabiyeh neighbourhood, an affluent part of the capital city.
Details of the incident in the Jordanian capital remain unclear. Israeli authorities imposed reporting restrictions in the immediate aftermath. According to the Vienna Convention of 1961 the security man has immunity from investigation and arrest, the Israeli foreign ministry said.
