Country singer Glen Campbell has died at the age of 81.

His family has paid tribute to the singer of the Rhinestone Cowboy who had been battling with Alzheimer for several years.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of out beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease," they said in a statement.

His publicist Sandy Brokaw confirmed the singer died in Nashville.

Mr Campbell's career spanned over six decades and he sold more than 45 million records, had 12 gold albums and 75 chart hits.

He co-starred with John Wayne in the 1969 movie True Grit and had a weekly audience of some 500 million people for the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS between 1969 and 1972.

The singer of the hits "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was a self-taught prodigy, who left his Arkansas home to be known by his boyish face, wavy hair and friendly tenor in the late 1960s and well into the seventies.

Mr Campbell, who was married four times, is survived by his wife Kim Campbell, their three children Cal, Shannon and Ashley and his children from previous marriages Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane and Dillon and ten grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren.

The legendary guitarist announced that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer in 2011.

The family has set up a donation page for Alzheimer's research.
