Dun dun DUN! | Dun dun DUN! |
That was quite the hour of soapy intrigue and revelation on “Game of Thrones” on Sunday. Hmm check out the arms on that humble blacksmith no wait oh my God it’s ... Gendry! Maybe we should meet with the Dragon Queen after all and oh by the way ... I’m pregnant! My sister has kind of a treasonous vibe going these days and wait a minute ... here’s a letter proving it! Did you know the Citadel has 15,782 steps and hey it says here that ... Jon Snow’s parents were married! Which gives him a totally legitimate claim on the Iron Throne! | That was quite the hour of soapy intrigue and revelation on “Game of Thrones” on Sunday. O.K. that last one was hilarious, as Gilly confirmed one of the biggest bombshells in the show as part of her usual trivia monologue, only Sam, aspiring wise man, was too wrapped up in resentment to notice. Elsewhere we also saw Jorah reunite with Daenerys for a minute — not sure you should be hugging Ser Greyscale like that, Dany — and the return of the Hound, Beric and Thoros, who all happened to land in an Eastwatch cell right before Jon Snow and his team arrived. | O.K. that last one was hilarious, as Gilly confirmed one of the biggest bombshells in the show as part of her usual trivia monologue, only Sam, aspiring wise man, was too wrapped up in resentment to notice. There’s certainly plenty of satisfaction to be had from dots getting connected. It’s just that after years of information trickling out in drips and drabs on “Game of Thrones,” this season’s weekly avalanches of answers can feel overwhelming and a bit disorienting.
It also saps the impact of each individual revelation when another one comes so quickly behind it. This is perhaps unavoidable in such a sprawling, complex tale. But if, say, Daenerys hadn’t spent so much time spinning her wheels in Essos and come to Dragonstone earlier to face more meaningful challenges there — or if they’d just done the usual 10 episodes this season — perhaps this current stretch wouldn’t feel like such an expository sprint. (Of course I’ve never crafted a world-dominant epic, so what do I know?)
Our first answer came seconds into this week’s episode: Jaime didn’t drown last week. (Not that many viewers expected him to.) Still unexplained is how he made it back up to the surface with all the armor and a golden hand but I guess that river had fortuitous currents. I posited last week that the big plunge might amount to a rebirth for Jaime, who had seen the future of dragon-based warfare and also learned conclusively that Tyrion had nothing to do with Joffery’s death.
Might he finally turn against Cersei and her mad desire for power? I wondered — for the last time, because I’ve wondered that before and until I see his hands around her throat, I’m done with that line of speculation. Jaime did express the doubts any man would after seeing his army flambéed, and he seemed even more emotionally conflicted after his meeting with Tyrion. But Cersei had the ultimate trump card: A little lion in the oven. | Might he finally turn against Cersei and her mad desire for power? Now, do we believe her? She was meeting with Qyburn, who is presumably has obstetrics skills to go along with his talents in weapons crafting, wildfire wrangling and dead warrior reanimating. But Cersei has to know that just the thing to motivate an increasingly hopeless Jaime is a future that seems worth fighting for. I doubt they have stick tests down at the King’s Landing CVS. | Now, do we believe her? We’ll have more on all of this soon. But first here’s a look back at what else happened on Sunday: | We’ll have more on all of this soon. But first here’s a look back at what else happened on Sunday: |
• Now we know why Littlefinger was so interested in the late Maester Luwin’s scroll archives a few weeks ago. He planted the letter Sansa sent Robb from King’s Landing, the one Cersei forced her to write to urge Robb to bend the knee before Joffery. Robb knew Sansa had been forced into it but Arya does not, which is why Littlefinger left it for her to find, as he twirled his mustache in the shadows. | • Now we know why Littlefinger was so interested in the late Maester Luwin’s scroll archives a few weeks ago. • Gendry showed up pretty much where we met him way back in Season 1 — working in obscurity as a blacksmith. While he never knew his father he does share at least one additional quality with him, in addition to the Baratheon black hair. Perhaps you recall that Robert’s weapon of choice was a hammer, too. | • Gendry showed up pretty much where we met him way back in Season 1 — working in obscurity as a blacksmith. • So do we think it was Jon’s Targaryen way with a dragon that finally made Dany swoon? The show laid on her heartache a little thick when he left Dragonstone. “If I don’t return, at least you won’t have to deal with the King in the North anymore,” he said. “I’ve grown used to him,” she murmured. | • So do we think it was Jon’s Targaryen way with a dragon that finally made Dany swoon? • Nobody glowers like you do, Tyrion told Jorah. Nobody looks longingly back at his Khaleesi like he does, either. | • Nobody glowers like you do, Tyrion told Jorah. Nobody looks longingly back at his Khaleesi like he does, either. |
