| • In Preston, the four strikers shot dead by soldiers of the 72nd Highlanders during the 1842 Plug Plot riots are commemorated by a tableau inspired by Goya’s painting The Third of May 1808 (Letters, 2 September). The memorial was erected by Preston trades council and the Labour History Group, together with the borough and county councils as a reminder of the struggle of the workers to secure their democratic rights.
