Local police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on suspicion of her murder and theft, and were continuing to search for a body. Brazilian police confirmed they had arrested a 17-year-old male and were searching for six others. Kelty was killed in Lauro Sodré, a community two hours from the Amazon town of Coari, they said.
José Afonso Barradas Júnior, chief detective in the Brazilian Amazon town of Coari, said the teenager was arrested in Lauro Sodré, a remote community two hours from Coari, and that police were searching for five other people. “We have a person in custody,” José Afonso Barradas Júnior, chief detective inCoari, told the Guardian. “People knew she had disappeared and indicated possible authors of her disappearance.”
“We have a person in custody but I cannot release names yet,” Barradas Júnior said. He said police believed they knew what happened to Kelty and would release the arrested teenager’s name and more details later on Tuesday. In a statement, police in the state capital Manaus said the 17-year-old was arrested in Codajás, 150 miles (240km) away.
“People knew she had disappeared and indicated possible authors of her disappearance,” he said. “Her emergency equipment was stolen and we managed to trace it. It was an emergency GPS. The arrested man said Kelty was camped on Boieiro Island, which faces the community of Lauro Sodré, 225 miles from Manaus, when two people approached her. Five others, including the arrested man, then arrived and the group stole her belongings. She was shot twice by a sawn-off, 20 calibre shotgun and her body thrown in the river.
“Her belongings were found, all her equipment, a pair of sneakers, some objects that were with her were found.” According to the teenager, the group then tried to sell her two mobile phones, a tablet computer and a GoPro camera in local communities. Police have identified the other six people and arrest warrants have been issued for them.
Residents of Lauro Sodré reported having seen Emma Kelty sail past the community in her canoe while still alive. Fire officers and the Brazilian navy are continuing to search for her body and have searched the area where her body was allegedly thrown.
