According to initial reports, the attacker was also shot dead after approaching a gate of Har Adar posing as a labourer. Police said the attacker arrived at a rear entrance to the Har Adar settlement at about 7am as security guards were opening a gate to admit Palestinian labourers with permits.
The assailant apparently arrived at a rear entrance to the settlement at around 7am as security guards were opening a gate to admit Palestinian labourers with permits. When security guards became suspicious, the individual pulled out a pistol hidden under his shirt and opened fire, fatally wounding three Israelis a policeman and two civilian security guards before being shot and killed himself.
When security guards became suspicious, the individual pulled out a gun hidden under his shirt and opened fire, fatally wounding three Israelis, before being shot himself. Authorities identified the gunman as a 37-year-old resident of Beit Surik a nearby village who held a work permit to work in settlements. Permits are only issued after security vetting.
“A terrorist who arrived at the rear gate of Har Adar along with Palestinian labourers entering the settlement pulled out a weapon and opened fire at the force at the site,” an Israeli police spokesman said. Shay Retter, the head of Har Adar’s security committee, said that between 100 and 150 Palestinian labourers typically enter the community each day for work.
“Three Israelis were killed in the attack, another was wounded and the terrorist was neutralised.” Moshir Abu Katish, a paramedic volunteer who lives in the neighbouring Arab-Israeli town of Abu Gosh, described the aftermath of the attack to the Jerusalem Post.
Police later said the Palestinian provisionally identified as a 37-year-old resident of Beit Surik who held a work permit had died of his wounds. “I ran to treat the injured people who were suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. Unfortunately, the three more seriously injured people in the attack were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person who was injured we treated at the scene before he was transported to the hospital for further treatment and observation.”
The three dead Israelis all sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body. A fourth Israeli injured in the incident was transferred to hospital in Jerusalem in a serious condition. The incident, at a settlement north-west of Jerusalem that lies near several Palestinian villages, came as US envoy Jason Greenblatt was in the city for talks on relaunching the moribund Middle East peace process.
The incident, at a settlement northwest of Jerusalem that lies near several Palestinian villages, comes nearly two years after a wave of unrest broke out. In recent months a wave of unrest that broke out two years ago has largely subsided.
The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.
