The force has tweeted that the motorway is expected to fully reopen between 06:00 and 07:00 BST. Motorists heading to Gatwick Airport were being warned to allow extra time for their journeys.
In an earlier statement, police said: "The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours this morning while police carry out an investigation of the scene." Earlier, Highways England reported that motorists had been left trapped in queues of traffic, but it later tweeted vehicles were being "slowly" released.
