Ben Stokes and Alex Hales suspended by England until further notice
(about 3 hours later) | |
Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be considered for selection for England international matches until further notice, the England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed.
Stokes was arrested after an incident in Bristol in the early hours of Monday morning that led to his arrest under suspicion of actual bodily harm. Hales, Stokes’s England team-mate, has been helping police with their investigation.
“Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be considered for selection for England international matches until further notice,” read an ECB statement. “Each remains on full pay pending further ECB investigation and the ongoing police investigation.
“Andrew Strauss, director of England cricket, will today refer the internal disciplinary procedure for these two players to the cricket discipline commission, chaired by Tim O’Gorman.
“These decisions, fully supported by ECB chairman Colin Graves, were made following the release of footage viewed by ECB for the first time on Wednesday night.”
Stokes had earlier apologised to the ECB following the incident that has left his Ashes future in doubt. A senior souce at the ECB confirmed it held a telephone conference on Thursday morning in which it reviewed footage obtained by the Sun that purports to show the incident outside the Mbargo nightclub. The Sun are reported to have handed the video to police.
After spending the remainder of Monday night in custody, Stokes was released under investigation. |
