Marseille: Fatal knife attack at train station Marseille attack: Two young women stabbed to death
(about 4 hours later)
Two people have been killed in a knife attack at Marseille's Saint Charles train station. Two young women have been stabbed to death at Marseille's main train station in a suspected terrorist attack.
The assailant has been shot dead by security forces in the southern French city. The incident is being treated as an act of terrorism, officials say. Soldiers on guard at the station shot dead the attacker, who police described as of North African appearance and aged about 30. Witnesses said he shouted "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest).
"Two victims have been stabbed to death," regional police chief Olivier de Mazieres told AFP. One victim had her throat slit and the other was stabbed in the stomach. They were aged 17 and 20.
France's Interior Minister, Gérard Collomb, said he was immediately travelling to the scene. President Emmanuel Macron said he was disgusted by the "barbarous act".
France's national police tweeted that the situation at the station had been resolved, and the perpetrator "neutralised and shot down". He paid tribute to the soldiers and the police officers who responded.
Police had earlier asked people to avoid the area. The attack took place by a bench outside the southern French city's Saint Charles train station.
An unnamed official told France's Le Monde newspaper that the assailant had cried "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest). Interior Minister Gérard Collomb told reporters that the attacker had fled after the first murder but returned to kill again.
French media report that both victims were women; one had her throat cut and the other was stabbed to death. Soldiers were already in the station as part of Operation Sentinelle, which sees combat troops patrol streets and protect key sites amid France's ongoing state of emergency.
According to BFMTV, the attacker was killed by French soldiers who were already in the station as part of Operation Sentinelle, which sees combat troops patrol streets and protect key sites amid an ongoing state of emergency. This fits a pattern of recent attacks
The man who carried out the attack was in his twenties and of North African appearance, reports say. By Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris
France's national train operator SNCF has asked people to postpone planned journeys via the station. Police are treating this as a terrorist attack, but there are plenty of question marks about the man and his motivation.
Recent terror attacks in France French media report that the killer was in his 20s with a police record for petty offences.
If so, that fits in with a steady pattern of recent attacks in France, carried out by individuals who seem to have a deep hatred of French authority, aggravated by exposure to Islamist ideas.
