The victims were found in an upstairs flat in Croydon Road on Saturday. The man and the woman, both Chinese, were found in a ground floor flat in Croydon Road on Saturday.
Northumbria Police has not released any details but a neighbour has said they are believed to be Chinese and possibly students. The pair have not yet been formally identified, but are believed to be students. Police are attempting to trace their next of kin.
A police spokesman said officers and pathologists were working to determine how the pair died, and were speaking to local residents. The bodies were discovered in separate bedrooms in the flat and had suffered serious head injuries.
