Many of the papers' front pages feature striking images of the conflict between Georgia and Russia.

The Daily Telegraph and the Independent picture Georgian tanks and troops retreating from the city of Gori.

The Times carries a photo of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili being protected by bodyguards from an approaching Russian helicopter.

The Daily Mirror and the Financial Times warn that Russia is on the verge of "forfeiting its world standing".

'Recovery signs'

The Daily Express leads with Bank of England figures showing a fall in the cost of the most popular mortgages.

It hails them as "the first signs of recovery" after the housing crisis.

However, the Daily Mail offers a gloomier assessment, saying figures show house sales have slumped by 40% in the past three months.

It blames the government for dithering over the issue of stamp duty. Some buyers have postponed purchases to wait and see what happens, it says.

Olympic tributes

All the papers rejoice in Britain's second Olympic gold medal.

The Guardian says champion Rebecca Adlington will be honoured in her home town of Mansfield, Notts, by having its swimming baths named after her.

The Daily Mail is one of many papers to report the 400m freestyle winner has an addiction to shoes and says she plans to celebrate with more footwear.

The Sun notes both Britain's gold medals have been won by women - and calls on "the lads" to do better.

Poolside call

The Daily Mirror is one of many papers to claim that a poolside row between divers Tom Daley and Blake Aldridge sank their chances of winning a medal.

The Daily Mail puts the boot into Aldridge for taking a mobile phone call between their synchronised dives.

Meanwhile, the Guardian thinks the squabble was undignified.

It says by going public with the spat, Aldridge risked "upsetting" those who have fallen for the charms of schoolboy Daley who has proved a hit.
