M6 in Cumbria closed due to crane on fire M6 in Cumbria closed due to crane fire
(about 5 hours later)
A 25-mile stretch of the M6 in Cumbria has partially reopened after a crane fire. A 25-mile stretch of the M6 in Cumbria was closed for several hours after a crane caught fire.
Cumbria Police said the motorway is now open southbound and between junctions 37 and 39 northbound. Both carriageways were closed between Junction 36 and Junction 39 as a precaution due to smoke from the burning 140-tonne crane.
It remains closed northbound at junction 36 but the backlog is being cleared via one lane. It is expected to remain closed for "several hours". No-one was reported injured and all but one northbound lane was reopened by late afternoon on Thursday.
The crane is on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway after the blaze broke out at about 07:40 BST. The remaining lane which suffered the most damage was due to be resurfaced and open again by Friday.
