New York City police are responding to reports of shots fired in lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon. New York City police said several people were killed and numerous people were injured after a car drove through a bike path in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon.
The NYPD said one person was in custody and “no others outstanding” in its preliminary investigation. The NYPD said the suspect exited the vehicle displaying “imitation firearms” and was shot by police.
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said he had been briefed on the incident and that first responders were on the scene. Multiple witnesses told the Guardian they heard at least five gunshots.
An Associated Press photographer on the scene said he witnessed at least two bodies lying motionless on the path beneath tarps.
