A husband went to the aid of a dying pedestrian in Surrey unaware she was his wife, it has been revealed.

James Peters, who had stopped to help paramedics in Oxshott Road, Leatherhead, only realised who she was when he was handed her handbag.

Susan Peters, 60, from Leatherhead, died at the scene shortly after she was hit by a Volkswagen Golf on Friday.

Mr Peters, also 60, who is a magistrate and president of Twickenham Rugby Club, said he had lost a "perfect wife".

'Totally devastated'

He added: "We had only just celebrated our wedding anniversary and now she is gone. I am totally devastated. My wife was perfect.

"She was the better half of me and now my better half is gone, I'm totally devastated."

Mr Peters was on his way to pick up his wife up from a bus stop when he saw an accident and stopped to help paramedics.

He said he held a saline drip before a passerby handed him the victim's handbag and he realised who she was.

The couple who have three sons, had recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

A 25-year-old man from Fetcham who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on police bail until 7 November.
