A prisoner managed to escape from custody while on a hospital visit, the Ministry of Justice has said.

The inmate from HMP The Mount in Bovingdon was visiting Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire on Friday.

A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman confirmed he "briefly escaped from custody" but was "swiftly recaptured by police in hospital grounds".

The Hertfordshire category C prison is for men serving short sentences or with three months left to serve.

The spokeswoman said the incident was being investigated.
