There are unconfirmed reports of as many as 60 injured. Firefighters and medics have rushed to the scene. On Twitter Austrian police said the situation was under control and a technical fault had caused the blast.
It is a hub for imported Russian gas, which is sent on to Germany and Italy. One unconfirmed report spoke of 60 hurt. Emergency teams are at the scene.
