I would like to thank Roger Squires for all the pleasure that his Rufus crosswords have given so many of us over the years (Farewell Rufus, king of the crossword, G2, 18 December). Finding the answer to crossword clues is often a strenuous process requiring the solver to source a letter here and a letter there until a whole word can be cobbled together. Not so with Rufus, whose laconic clues could often be solved with a single leap of imagination, making the answers ring in the mind like a chord played beautifully in tune. Thank you, Mr Squires, for all your grace and skill.Susan TomesEdinburghI would like to thank Roger Squires for all the pleasure that his Rufus crosswords have given so many of us over the years (Farewell Rufus, king of the crossword, G2, 18 December).
