A 29-year-old man remains in a critical condition in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital following an early morning assault in Coleraine.

He was attacked and beaten at Bannfield Road in the town at about 0230 BST on Sunday.

Police have said that three men visited Coleraine hospital at about 0300 BST to check on the man's condition.

They have appealed for those three men to come forward as they may be able to help with the investigation.

Bannfield Road has been closed and diversions are in place. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternative route where possible.

Ulster Unionist councillor Norman Hillis said the victim seemed to have been attacked on a night out.

"It would seem to me that the victim was just on his way home having had a night out in Coleraine, which would normally be a pleasure but sadly it's turned into a possible tragedy," he said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family at this point."

Police have asked anyone with information about the the attack to get in touch.
