Students arriving in Dundee to start university have been warned not to leave their drinks unattended in a campaign to cut drink-spiking.

Undercover police officers have been operating at Dundee University's student union to address the issue.

They have been leaving swizzle sticks with the slogan "the next time it could be drugs" in unattended drinks.

Despite the campaign, Tayside Police said that reported incidents of drink-spiking in the city were rare.

One of the undercover officers, Pc Gavin Munro, said: "We recognise that the issue does raise concern among revellers and both Tayside Police and Dundee University Student Association take drink-spiking extremely seriously."

Police advised anyone who thinks their drink may have been spiked to contact officers immediately and request a test.

Tayside Police drugs education worker Emma Cepok said: "The best thing you can do is to avoid becoming a victim in the first place. Never leave your drink unattended."
