Police confirmed on Friday that a man had been shot dead at the Junction Hotel in Maroubra in Sydney’s south after stabbing an officer. A critical incident investigation has been launched. Police confirmed on Friday that the man, named as Nick Newman, 33, had been shot dead at the Junction Hotel in Maroubra in Sydney’s south after stabbing an officer. A critical incident investigation has been launched.

“An officer attached to a specialist command sustained stab wounds and has been taken to hospital after a confrontation,” the statement said. Speaking to reporters later in the evening, Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said the 45-year-old detective sergeant had been stabbed in the chest and abdomen. He had undergone surgery at St Vincent’s hospital and was still in a critical condition.
“A man died at the scene after a firearm was discharged. Walton said detectives had approached Newman in the beer garden of the hotel, and he stabbed the officer as they tried to arrest him. Two other detectives then shot the man, who died at the scene.
“A critical incident team from the Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharging of the firearm. “This was a relatively routine situation but unfortunately it’s escalated into a serious outcome,” Walton said.
“That investigation will be subject to independent review. He said the senior officer was “very well regarded by his peers” and other officers who witnessed the incident were traumatised.
“All information will be provided to the coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man’s death.” On Thursday police had said they were searching for Newman, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for child sex offences, and was scheduled to appear at Penrith local court on 24 January.
Walton confirmed that a critical incident team from the Homicide Squad would investigate the incident, and the investigation would be subject to independent review.
