Cuba hammered by Hurricane Ike Cuba hammered by Hurricane Ike
(about 1 hour later)
Hurricane Ike has been battering eastern Cuba with torrential rain and giant waves, leaving chaos in its wake. Hurricane Ike has moved back out to sea south of Cuba after battering the east of the island with torrential rain and giant waves, leaving chaos in its wake.
Some homes on the coast, from where about 800,000 people have been evacuated, are damaged beyond repair. Forecasters say Ike has weakened to a Category One Storm, but could still strengthen due to high sea temperatures before hitting Havana early on Tuesday.
Forecasters say Ike has moved out over warm Caribbean waters off Cuba's coast and may strengthen before hitting the west of the country late on Monday. Thousands of people have been evacuated from low-lying areas as a precaution.
Earlier, Ike killed 61 people in Haiti and reportedly damaged 80% of homes on the main Turks and Caicos islands. Ike has already caused 61 deaths in Haiti and reportedly damaged 80% of the homes in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Ike first came ashore in Cuba on Monday near Punta Lucrecia in the state of Holguin, about 510 miles (823km) south-east of Havana.

The Cuban Meteorology Institute said the eye of the hurricane came ashore near Punta Lucrecia in the state of Holguin about 510 miles (823km) south-east of the capital, Havana. State television broadcast pictures of the accompanying storm surge washing over coastal defences and sending waves crashing into buildings.
The storm surge flooded streets in the eastern part of the island as it made landfall. The hurricane then weakened slightly and was downgraded to a Category 2 storm, although the sustained winds of about 160km/h (100mph) tore the roofs off many buildings, knocked down trees and destroyed crops.
Although it weakened slightly to a Category Two storm, Ike was still packing maximum sustained winds near 160km/h (100mph). Later, Ike moved back out to water and at 2100 GMT was located about 70km (45 miles) south-east of the city of Cienfuegos, the US National Hurricane Center said.
The winds have torn the roofs off buildings, knocked down trees and destroyed coffee plantations and sugar cane fields. The NHC also downgraded Ike to a Category 1 hurricane after its maximum sustained winds dropped to about 130kmh (80mph). However, it said a slight increase in intensity was possible if the storm's centre remained over water.
Ike has moved out over water where it could strengthen before it makes a turn to the west-north-west later on Monday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The eye of the storm is forecast to continue westward along Cuba's southern coast before hitting western Cuba on Tuesday morning and emerging into the south-eastern Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday night.
It should then hit land again in western Cuba, heading in the direction of Havana, the NHC said. The storm left rubble strewn in the streets of Camaguey
