A 20-year-old man has had eye treatment after he was sprayed in the face with a chemical in a roadside attack.

The victim was walking with a woman in Bassaleg, Newport, when occupants of a car shouted abuse and spat at them.

Gwent Police said the black Renault Clio turned round twice more and the couple were again abused and spat at.

One of two men pretending to offer help then sprayed the unidentified chemical in the victim's face before getting into the same car and driving off.

The attack happened on Monday morning at Caerphilly Road.

There were two youths in the car, described as white, aged 16-17 and dressed in casual clothes, when it drove past the man and woman.

After the car drove towards Machen, two men appeared on the opposite side of the road under the pretence of offering to help them identify the culprits.

The victim began to cross the road and met one of the men, who produced a white sports drink bottle and sprayed the chemical in his face.

Police said the two men ran off and were seen getting into the Clio.

The victim was treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and released the same day.
