Shooting Reported at Central Michigan University Two Fatally Shot on Central Michigan University Campus
(about 1 hour later)
Police officers swarmed Central Michigan University’s campus on Friday morning after reports of a shooting at a residence hall. A gunman fatally shot two people at a Central Michigan University residence hall on Friday morning, sending police officers swarming to the campus and setting off a search for the shooter.
It was unclear how many people had been shot. The episode rattled nerves at Central Michigan, where details of the shooting were released slowly. The shooting came just over two weeks after 17 people were killed at a high school in Parkland, Fla., and amid a national conversation about gun control and gun rights. On the Central Michigan campus, in Mount Pleasant, about 150 miles northwest of Detroit, students were told to shelter in place or stay off campus. All public buildings and schools in Mount Pleasant were placed in lockdowns.
Sgt. Jim Ciochetto of the Michigan State Police said a shooting had taken place in a building on the campus, which is in Mount Pleasant, Mich., about 150 miles northwest of Detroit. The gunman, other officials said, was on the loose and being sought. University officials said the two victims were not students, and that the incident appeared to be domestic in nature. City police officers were seeking a 19-year-old who they warned was “armed and dangerous.”
University officials urged students to shelter in place on the campus. Molli Ferency, a spokeswoman for the city of Mount Pleasant, said all public buildings and schools were on lockdown. The search for the shooter was continuing late Friday morning.
Sergeant Ciochetto said state troopers, local police, university police and sheriff’s deputies were at the scene, and the State Police crime lab was on its way. Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were traveling to the crime scene. Sgt.
