According to AFP news agency, quoting police, 31 people died at the scene while nine succumbed to their injuries in hospital. It is now known that 33 of the passengers were Nepalis, 32 were Bangladeshi, one was Chinese and one was from the Maldives.
An army spokesman told Reuters news agency that at least 50 people had died. Of the 40 people killed, 31 died at the airport and nine in hospital, police sources told BBC News. A further nine are missing.
Among the 22 people injured, some are in a critical condition.
