A man who climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge sparking a major police operation and causing peak-hour traffic chaos has been arrested. A man who climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, bringing traffic to a standstill, has been brought down safely.
Police rescue officers followed the man on to the structure after he climbed the bridge just after4.30am on Wednesday. Shortly before 10am the man, who is believed to be known to police, climbed down from a cross beam of the bridge where he had been since around 4.30am on Wednesday. He was taken into police custody.
Earlier the man had climbed from his seat in the centre of the beam overhanging traffic, but turned around. He yelled at police and media for several minutes before climbing back.

Wearing a tracksuit, a cap and fingerless gloves, the man, aged in his forties, was brought down just after 9.30am. It’s believed he left a bicycle in the middle of the road before making the climb, the Nine Network reported. The man, believed to be in his forties, was handcuffed and brought to road level where he was taken in a waiting ambulance. More than 20 emergency services workers, including police, police rescue, and paramedics were in attendance.
Two of four northbound lanes on the bridge were closed during the police operation. Multiple police and fire rescue vehicles were on the bridge as traffic banked up back into the city. Commuters heading north over the bridge faced substantial delays, including on buses. Several lanes were closed during the peak-hour rush, with traffic reportedly banking up 20km in some areas.
Southbound lanes towards the city were open with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h in both directions. Motorists were urged avoid the area. Long queues of traffic were backed up on the bridge in both directions. Trains across the bridge continued to run as normal. The man was wearing a tracksuit, a cap and fingerless gloves.
