Several South African ministers, including that of finance, have said they are stepping down, following the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki. Eleven South African ministers - half the cabinet - have said they are stepping down, following the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki.
The leadership of the ruling African National Congress had said they wanted the cabinet to stay in place to ensure a smooth transition. The BBC's Jonah Fisher in Johannesburg says it is now clear how much unease there is in the ruling ANC.
Mr Mbeki is to leave office after accusations that he interfered in the prosecution of his rival, Jacob Zuma. The African National Congress is divided between supporters of Mr Mbeki and his rival, ANC leader Jacob Zuma.
Mr Zuma is ANC leader and favourite to become South Africa's next president. Mr Zuma's supporters had said they wanted the cabinet to stay in place to ensure a smooth transition.
