Perhaps at some point before Donald Trump entered the presidential race, someone should have had the common courtesy to tell him that there is no omertà in American politics.

Re “Thank Trump, or You’ll Be Sorry,” by Diana Butler Bass (Op-Ed, April 23):

It is not gratitude that President Trump seeks. It’s adulation.

It’s disturbing that leaders of other countries see this in him, enough so that they know they can manipulate him with praise. It’s bad enough when American allies know this. But hostile foreign powers also know it.
