As the first vehicle dodged the lost cow, it collided with another car - starting a five-car crash. Police said the cow was struck by a car, causing the animal to be thrown over the central reservation.
Two fire engines were called to the scene at about 2130 BST on Tuesday. The cow died at the scene. A further seven cars struck the cow on the southbound carriageway, causing damage to several of them.
Fire and ambulance services attended the accident and the road was closed for about two hours.
