The crash happened at about 1740 GMT about a quarter of a mile north of the village of Auldgirth on the A76 Dumfries to Kilmarnock road. Gail Skene, 40, from Closeburn, Thornhill, died after suffering head injuries when her Fiat Punto collided with a blue Vauxhall on the A76.
The Vauxhall driver, Raymond Wyllie, 29, died after being taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.
The crash happened at 1740 GMT on Friday, north of the village of Auldgirth.
