The recycling centre is believed to be the same one hit by a major blaze in May 2017. Stewart Nicholson, area manager for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said two businesses - Universal Recycling and Moulding Solutions Ltd - operate out of the site.
"It's granular plastic that's been on fire, large quantities, it looks like thousands of tonnes," he said.
He said fire investigation officers would begin work to determine the cause of the fire later.
Mr Nicholson said both the fire service and Public Health England (PHE) have been monitoring air and water quality in the area.
He said there were "no concerns" with the result of the tests.
PHE have tweeted about the effects of smoke.
