The High Street retailer, TK Maxx, has been forced to withdraw a walking stick offered for sale in its stores which was found to conceal a 20-inch sword.

The blade was discovered by a customer, who then contacted the News of the World newspaper.

It followed the earlier removal of a range of jackets by the chain which were sold with an attached penknife.

The firm put a statement on its website saying it takes the safety of customers and associates "very seriously".

It added: "We have been surprised by events this week and want to reassure the public that these incidents were by no means intentional and that we greatly regret that this has occurred."

TK Maxx is owned by Massachusetts-based TJX Companies Inc, which owns US chains TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
