We read that oil production is in “free fall” in “crisis-hit Venezuela” (Opec cuts – Oil cartel split amid pressure to raise supplies, 22 June). This is not due to maladministration by the Maduro government but because the US is rapidly winding down its Venezuelan oil imports for political reasons. The Trump administration is particularly averse to Venezuela’s attempt to spread the benefits of its primary resource among Venezuelans. The pressure to increase production elsewhere is to help plug the gap in the global supply – made wider by sanctions imposed on Iran.Kevin BannonLondon | We read that oil production is in “free fall” in “crisis-hit Venezuela” (Opec cuts – Oil cartel split amid pressure to raise supplies, 22 June).
