Forty fire engines are at the scene of the blaze, which stretches across 100 hectares (248 acres) of Wanstead Flats, in the south of Epping Forest near Stratford.
They arrived at about 4pm on Sunday after emergency services received more than 110 calls.
Some residents said they had been forced to leave their homes. Road closures were imposed and the Metropolitan police warned people to avoid the area.

Rob Davies, a London fire brigade (LFB) group manager who is at the scene, said: “Keep windows and doors shut, a lot of smoke is drifting across roads and, while there is no immediate threat to property, you should avoid the area if you can.
“Crews are working very hard at the scene and are using a variety of hose reels, water packs but also beaters to tackle the fire.”
Victoria Richards, a local resident, said she was told it would be hours before she could return to her home. She tweeted: “Evacuated from home due to huge fire on dry flats nearby. On side of road with two kids, no water or nappies, covered in ash ...”

Mike Power, a resident of Aldersbrook Road adjacent to the park, said: “There are multiple plumes of smoke which are possibly arising from separate sources and I can occasionally see flames coming up from the overgrowth. Police are telling people on my street to make preparations in case we are told to evacuate.”
He said that part of the fire was approaching a set of dry football pitches opposite his home, which he said would be unlikely to burn through easily.

However, there is foliage nearer to Lakehouse Road that he said could pose more of a problem if the blaze spread.
Ambulances and police vehicles attended the scene, along with fire engines from stations including Walthamstow, Leytonstone and Hainault.
Cann Hall police, which is part of the Met force, tweeted: “It is confined to the grass area, so please stay put, but close windows as smoke/ash is not the best for big or little lungs. Police will visit door-to-door to advise on evacuation if the situation changes.
“As tempting it is to get closer for a look, please stay away from the area. LFB are extremely busy fighting it, but fire can be unpredictable, spread quickly, or even surround you. Do not make their job harder!”
The A114 alongside Wanstead Flats remains closed due to the smoke.
