To the Editor:

Re “ ‘I Couldn’t Tell Anyone’: Stories of Abortion” (news article, July 12):

There are 422 men serving in Congress. Let’s assume that most of them are married to women and that at least half of them have daughters. Rounding these numbers, this gives us perhaps 600 women who are related in some way to congressmen.

Now Republicans outnumber Democrats, but to keep it simple, I’m just going to say that half of the 600 women are in Republican families.

Still with me?

Research shows that one in four women will have or have had an abortion by age 45. This means that of our 300 women, there are 75 who have had or will have abortions. And they are wives and daughters of the men who will have a direct effect on continued access to safe and legal abortion when they vote on our next Supreme Court nominee.

As women speak about their abortions, I wish that these women would add their voices. Most important, their husbands and fathers need to hear their stories.
