Mr Mantzios and his friends dropped to the ground for cover and watched as the attacker criss-crossed the avenue, shooting into businesses. Lenny Graf was watching his son and a friend play by the fountain when he heard "what sounded like firecrackers" and saw people start running.
Dennis Helm was getting ready for bed when he heard the gunfire. He desperately looked around for his son, Jason, nine. When he saw him, panic rose in his throat.
He lives a block south from where the shooting took place and his windows were open to catch a breeze on the warm night. "He was crouched down behind the fountain, the shooter was only about 10ft (3m) away from him," he told the BBC.
"There were 10 rapid [shots], a break, and a few more," he told the BBC on Monday morning. Mr Graf didn't know what to do. "I wasn't sure if I would get shot and I wasn't sure how I could protect my son," he said.
Paramedics could be seen performing CPR on the injured around the piazza afterwards, the Globe and Mail reports. But luckily, the gunman did not spot either of them. Shortly afterwards, he began walking away - and Mr Graf and his son were able to run into a restaurant, where they waited for the emergency services.
After police sealed off the scene of the attack, upturned coffee cups could be seen being used behind the ticker tape to mark evidence.
