“There was an explosion at approximately 1pm today in the public space off the south-east corner of the embassy compound. According to the embassy’s regional security officer, there was one individual who detonated a bomb. Other than the bomber, there were no injuries. The local police responded,” a US embassy spokesperson told the Guardian. | |
Videos posted on social media showed smoke filling an intersection as groups of pedestrians gathered and police surrounded the vast structure in north-eastern Beijing on Thursday afternoon. Roads near the embassy were blocked. | |
