(35 minutes later)
A suspect in the murder of the schoolgirl Lucy McHugh has been remanded in custody at Southampton magistrates court accused of failing to provide his Facebook password to detectives investigating the death. A suspect in the murder of schoolgirl Lucy McHugh has appeared in court charged with failing to provide detectives investigating her death with his Facebook password.
Earlier, Stephen-Alan Nicholson, 24, was bailed as part of the investigation and told that he must not enter the city, Hampshire police said. Stephen-Alan Nicholson was remanded in custody at Southampton magistrates court where he appeared charged under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (Ripa).
Detectives appealed for help from the public as they investigate the circumstances of the 13-year-old’s death and piece together what happened after she left her home in Mansel Road East, Southampton, at 9.30am last Wednesday. The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment.
Her body was found in woodland near Southampton Sports Centre at 7.45am on Thursday. The court was told that the allegation involved the 24-year-old, of no fixed address, refusing to provide his Facebook password to detectives investigating any private messages sent between himself and the 13-year-old girl.
DS Paul Barton said: “This investigation very much continues and we really need the help of the community to understand Lucy’s activity in the 24 hours before her body was found. Lucy’s body was found in woodland near Southampton Sports Centre on 26 July. She had been stabbed to death.
“We know that this is causing a great deal of concern locally; please be assured we are doing all we possibly can to bring whoever is responsible for Lucy’s death to justice.”
