Indonesia earthquake: at least 82 dead after quake strikes Bali and Lombok Indonesia earthquake: at least 82 dead after quake strikes Lombok
(about 2 hours later)
The death toll from Sunday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok has risen to 82. At least 82 people have been killed in a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday evening, the secondly deadly quake to hit the popular tourist island in a week.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said early on Monday thousands of people had been evacuated from buildings to outdoor shelters. Hundreds were injured and thousands of homes were damaged in the quake that struck the island at 6.46pm on Sunday. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said it expected the death toll to rise. At least 100 aftershocks had been recorded as of Monday morning.
Sunday’s earthquake triggered panic among holidaymakers and residents. Sunday’s quake was also strongly felt in Bali. Pictures showed damage to two shopping malls and a temple in Ubud, and there was also minor damage to Bali airport. Despite superficial damage, flights from Lombok and Bali airports continued to operate on Sunday evening.
The quake triggered widespread panic across Lombok, with residents fleeing their homes and heading to higher ground, after the tremor initially triggered a tsunami warning. The alert was later cancelled.
Most of the victims died in northern Lombok, far from the main tourist spots on the south and west of the island. Rescue officials said much of the damage had hit Lombok’s main city of Mataram, with several areas losing power and patients evacuated from the main hospital, witnesses and officials said.

Residents of the city described a strong jolt that sent people scrambling to get out of buildings.
“Everyone immediately ran out of their homes, everyone is panicking,” Iman, who like many Indonesians has one name, told AFP.“Everyone immediately ran out of their homes, everyone is panicking,” Iman, who like many Indonesians has one name, told AFP.
Electricity was knocked out in several parts of the city and patients were evacuated from the main hospital, witnesses and officials said. The United States Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was on land on Lombok, though initial reports put it just off the coast. It struck at a depth of 10km (six miles), a week after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake killed 14 people on Lombok and briefly stranded hundreds of hikers on the slopes of a volcano.
The quake struck in the early evening on Sunday. The disaster agency is still assessing the full extent of damage across Lombok, and its Gili islands, three small islands on Lombok’s north-west coast that are frequented by tourists.

Holidaymakers on the Gilis reportedly flocked to higher ground and huddled together as the aftershocks continued. Saffron Amis, a British student visiting the islands, told Reuters dozens of tourists were evacuated to a hill after the quake.
US model Chrissy Teigen was on holiday in Bali with her family when the quake struck and tweeted throughout the shaking. Emergency teams have been deployed and are preparing to evacuate people from the Gili islands and other areas. Hospitals are reportedly full, with people being treated in carparks and makeshifts medical tents.

“It was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams,” he wrote. “Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking. Power went out for a while. Lots of cracks, fallen doors.” The disaster agency said the main focus on Monday morning would be on rescue efforts and getting medical assistance and basic supplies to those in need. On social media messages about missing tourists circulated.

Most of Lombok suffered power cuts, local media reported. The quake was felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of houses, hotels, and restaurants. “All the hotel guests were running, so I did too. People filled the streets,” said Michelle Lindsay, an Australian tourist. “A lot of officials were urging people not to panic.”

Other witnesses said the initial quake grew in intensity over several seconds, rattling windows and doors, and there were many aftershocks.
The country’s disaster management agency urged people to stay away from the sea. However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a metre was later withdrawn.
