Re “A Worrisome Invader” (Science Times, Aug. 7):

In light of the appearance of an invasive new tick species in the United States, I want to remind readers that one of the best tools we have for keeping ticks out of our homes is by keeping our dogs and cats safe from them, too.

It is critically important that we protect our companion animals from ticks and tick-borne diseases by checking them regularly, especially after they have been outside. For cats, it is safest to keep them indoors. Dogs should never be left outside unattended, so you can limit exposure to ticks by avoiding walking them through tall grass.

When checking an animal for ticks, pay special attention to dark, moist areas like folds of skin and ears, and remove ticks promptly when you find them.
