While the tweet might come as a surprise, it is possible that brighter days are on the horizon for US-Mexico relations. The Central American country’s president-elect, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said on Friday that progress was indeed being made in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump had dubbed a “disaster” for US workers and industry.  While the tweet might come as a surprise, it is possible that brighter days are on the horizon for US-Mexico relations. 
Shortly after Trump’s tweet, the incoming chief trade negotiator for Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Jesus Seade, said the US has softened its position on the “sunset clause” in NAFTA. Trump has been pushing Mexico and Canada to agree to the clause, which would allow for a renegotiation of the deal every five years, and for a NAFTA member nation to withdraw at the same time.
Seade also stated that the “correct focus” on the energy area of NAFTA has already been agreed.
Meanwhile, Lopez Obrador said on Friday that progress was indeed being made in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump had dubbed a “disaster” for US workers and industry.
