Pilgrims brave rain - By Nuala McCann, BBC News NI in Knock Pope's people on Phoenix pilgrimage - By Leanna Byrne in Dublin
The popemobile was not the dinky one that carried John Paul II and it buzzed quickly through the crowds. Grey clouds, light rain and soft gospel music hangs in the air above the revellers making their mini-pilgrimage from the city centre to Phoenix Park.
But they got up close to Pope Francis - children on parents' shoulders; old people in wheelchairs, people in plastic ponchos and hats and mountain gear - captured by his warmth. Scrums of people wearing rain jackets, hats and backpacks are directed by bunting, bobbing and weaving up to their allocated space, set out alphabetically.
Knock was not packed - there were plenty of seats for those who wanted them - and crowds at the barrier were just three deep at places. Deck chairs have already been wedged into place and sandwiches or other more exotic dishes - I did see a salmon curry - have already been taken out of bags.
But those who had made the journey said it was worth it, in spite of the misery of the rain. The crowd are happy to be here - all have booked their tickets to hear what Pope Francis has to say.
"We're here because we're Catholic and we're proud of it," said one woman. Like the pilgrims at Croke Park on Saturday night, these are Pope Francis's people.
