They were confirmed dead at the scene. |
Detectives said they had identified a male suspect, who is known to the victims, and were making urgent attempts to arrest him.
An area around Northdown Road was cordoned off while examinations were carried out and CCTV was being examined. Officers also carried out house-to-house inquiries.
Neighbours described hearing screams in the early hours of the morning and one woman said she saw a man leaving the scene in a van. A neighbour told BirminghamLive: “I thought it was foxes screaming. She [one of the victims] was absolutely screaming her head off. He wasn’t speaking English, that’s for sure. He shouted something and then ran off.
“There was a lot of screaming and shouting and then I saw the guy run off. About a minute later I saw him leave in a van.”
Another neighbour said he was woken at about 12.30am by screaming but assumed it was people returning home from a night out. He said: “Then police knocked on my door and asked for some towels, so I knew at that point it was serious. I’ve got a young family so I was worried about what was going on.”
Forensics tents were erected on the front lawn of a property that was cordoned off by police tape as friends and relatives of the victims gathered at the scene. Another relative or friend arrived at the scene, passing under the cordon to enter a house where a group seemed to be congregating to grieve.
It is understood the victims were originally from Syria and had lived in the UK for about 16 years.
DI Caroline Corfield from the homicide team at West Midlands police said: “What has happened this morning is truly devastating and heartbreaking. Our thoughts go out to the two victims’ family and friends at this traumatic time.
“Tragically there was nothing which could be done to save them and we are working to establish the circumstances behind what happened. We are still in the very early stages of our investigation but we believe the offender is known to the victims. We are appealing to him to come forward as a matter of urgency.”
The Solihull MP, Julian Knight, issued a statement, saying: “My thoughts go out the family and friends of the mother and daughter tragically killed in Northdown Road in the early hours of this morning. Whilst still in the early stages of their investigation, the police do believe that the offender is known to the victims.”
