At least 31 people have died in North and South Carolina because of Florence, which began as a fearsome hurricane and was downgraded to a formidable tropical depression. “This remains a significant disaster that affects much of our state,” Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina said on Monday. “The next few days will be long ones as the flooding continues.”
Even though Florence has moved on, flooding and power outages continue to pose a threat. The devastation was wide-ranging.
For instance, Wilmington, N.C., a city of about 119,000 residents, has been virtually cut off, as the roads leading to it have become submerged. And in New Bern, N.C., about 100 miles up the coast, public housing residents are wondering what will become of their flooded homes. At least 33 people have died in North and South Carolina because of Florence.
In both Carolinas, churches provided literal and spiritual refuge. In North Carolina, Florence prompted well over 1,000 rescues and volunteers navigated dark, flooded streets to rescue residents from waist-high waters. In North Carolina, floodwaters swept away part of a wall holding back a pond of toxic substances and overran several lagoons of pig waste. Tens of thousands were left without power and, in New Bern, N.C., public housing residents wondered what will become of their flooded homes.
