Thomas Jones: Hunt for missing Worcester student Worcester student missing: Criminal probe launched
(about 4 hours later)
The family of a missing student who disappeared during his first week at university said they are determined to "find our boy". Police want to trace two men in connection with the disappearance of a student in his first week of university.
Thomas Jones, 18, was last seen near the River Severn in Worcester, at about 03:30 BST, on Wednesday. Thomas Jones, 18, was last seen near the River Severn in Worcester in the early hours of Wednesday.
His aunt Jackie Rogers said a "small army" is carrying out house-to-house inquires in and around Hylton Road. West Mercia Police have released CCTV images of the revellers they want to speak to, recorded at nearby Velvet nightclub.
They want the public to check their CCTV cameras, dashcam footage, gardens and sheds for any sign of the teenager. Hundreds of volunteers have joined police with the search.
His family believes he may have walked over Sabrina Bridge, near Worcester Racecourse. Grainy CCTV footage of a man fitting Thomas's description appears to show him then turning right on to Hylton Road. Officers have been "working around the clock" to find Mr Jones, the force said.
Mrs Rogers, 52, said the teenager sent a Facebook message to a friend at 03.46, but no-one has heard from him since. Det Insp Mark Bellamy said: "We have been pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and we are now currently treating this a criminal investigation.
The mother-of-two said: "We are fully focused to find our boy. Everyone has come together. We have a small army making house-to-house inquires." "I'd ask anyone who recognises the men pictured, or has seen them in any photos on their social media accounts, to please come forward."
Thomas, from Bromsgrove, was due to start a primary teaching course at the University of Worcester. He had only moved on 16 September. Police believe Mr Jones crossed the Sabrina footbridge, near Worcester Racecourse, and then walked on to the footpath that runs along the top of the flood defences on Hylton Road in the direction of Hallow, just before 03.50 BST.
West Mercia Police said the teenager's disappearance was "extremely out of character". Police said hundreds of volunteers had been supporting the investigation, which was an "unprecedented response."
Divers from South Wales Search and Rescue had been deployed to search the river by Worcester Rowing Club on Grandstand Road, but had not made any significant discoveries. People have been asked to check CCTV video, dashcams and garden sheds.
The teenager was believed to have been wearing pale-coloured jeans, a navy blue woollen zip-up Lacoste top and green shoes at the time of his disappearance. Mr Jones' aunt, Jackie Rogers, said a "small army" was carrying out house-to-house inquires in and around Hylton Road and were determined to "find our boy".
Appeals were made by West Brom Football Club as Thomas is a season ticket holder at The Hawthorns. The Baggies also shared his details on the big screen at the match against Millwall, while local rivals Aston Villa followed suit on Saturday.
