Floods kill nine people in Yemen Dozens killed by floods in Yemen
(about 20 hours later)
Nine people have been killed in floods in Yemen, according to the country's governing party. At least 48 people have been killed or are missing in Yemen, following torrential rains.
The General People's Congress said the floods, in the province of Hadramawt, had also left dozens of others missing after heavy rain in the area. Most of the casualties are in the eastern province of Hadhramawt, hit by a tropical storm earlier this week.
Yemeni officials said many houses and government buildings had also been badly damaged. An air rescue operation is under way. Damage is extensive because most homes in the area are made of mud brick.
The Yemeni president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has flown to the port of Mukalla to oversee rescue operations. Reports say the floodwaters are threatening the historic high-rise mud buildings of Shibam - a Unesco world heritage site.
Army helicopters have been flown in to help with the rescue efforts, after roads were damaged by the flood water. A reporter for the Associated Press news agency in Shibam said he had watched a two-storey mud-brick house disintegrate on Saturday.
Provincial Governor Ahmed Salem al-Khanabshi said six soldiers had died while attempting to rescue people in the city of Sayoun, the Associated Press news agency reported. There has also been severe flooding in the capital, Sanaa, in recent days.
"Thirty hours of rains and floods have paralysed life here," he added. On Saturday at least six aircraft took off from Sanaa carrying tents, food and medicine to Hadramawt province, airport officials told AFP news agency.
